Jan Vičar (born 1949 in Olomouc) is a university teacher, musicologist, and composer. He studied at the Secondary Grammar School and Faculty of Arts in Olomouc, Conservatory in Ostrava, Janáček Academy of Music in Brno, and Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Prague. He worked at the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education of Palacký University in Olomouc, where in the years 1990–2016, he was instrumental in establishing the musicology department. He served as editor-in-chief of the leading Czech music journal Hudební rozhledy (Music Review; in 1986–1989) and lectured at American universities (1997–1998; 2005). He is a long-time teacher of the Department of Music Theory at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (since 1980). Since 2018 he has been a professor at the Department of Music Education and Culture at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. He is an influential organizer and conceptual worker: founder of the Music Management study program (in 1989) and the composition and research project „The Discord of Theory and Practice?“ (in 2004) at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, the scholarly periodical Musicologica Olomucensia (in 1993), the international festival of contemporary music MusicOlomouc (in 2009), the music-educational journal Paedagogia Musica (in 2021). He has served as a member of the central bodies of the Union of Czech Composers and Concert Artists and the Czech Music Council, as well as a councilor of the State Culture Fund of the Czech Republic 2018–2021. He has been cooperating as a dramaturge, member, or chairman of competition juries with the choral Festival of Songs Olomouc since 1973. He has published seven books (including Imprints. Essays on Czech Music and Aesthetics, in English) and numerous studies on topics ranging from music aesthetics and criticism to music theory and the history of contemporary music culture. He was named an honorary member of the Czech Society for Musicology (in 2019). He is the author of one hundred and ten compositions and a member of the Protective Union of Authors and the Society of Czech Composers. His compositions have been performed in concert and published in print in the Czech Republic and abroad. Seven CDs, Vivat Universitas!, Zpíváme si (We Are Singing), Ej, Janku! (Oh, Johny!), Přeludya (Phantasms/Preludes), Cesta k slunci (Way to the Sun), Píseň starého blázna (Song of the Old Madman), and Vysoko hvězda (Shining Star) have been positively received by domestic and foreign music critics. His choruses and songs for children to the verses of Jiří Žáček have attracted tens of thousands of viewers and listeners worldwide on the author’s YouTube channel „Zpíváme si“ (We Are Singing; since 2022). 

Prof. PhDr. MgA. Jan Vičar, CSc. (narozen 1949 v Olomouci) se věnuje vysokoškolské pedagogické činnosti, muzikologii a kompozici. Studoval na Střední všeobecně vzdělávací škole a Filozofické fakultě Univerzity Palackého v Olomouci, Konzervatoři v Ostravě, JAMU v Brně a AMU v Praze. Pracoval na Filozofické a Pedagogické fakultě Univerzity Palackého v Olomouci, kde se v letech 1990–2016 zásadním způsobem podílel na vybudování oboru, resp. katedry muzikologie. Působil jako šéfredaktor hlavního českého hudebního časopisu Hudební rozhledy (1986–1989), přednášel na amerických univerzitách (1997–1998; 2005). Je dlouholetým pedagogem Katedry hudební teorie Hudební a taneční fakulty Akademie múzických umění v Praze (od roku 1980) a od roku 2018 působí jako profesor na Katedře hudební výchovy a kultury Fakulty pedagogické Západočeské univerzity v Plzni. Je vlivným organi-zátorem a koncepčním pracovníkem: zakladatelem studijního programu Hudební produkce (1989) a kompozičně-výzkumného projektu Svár teorie s praxí? (2004) na AMU v Praze, vědeckého periodika Musicologica Olomucensia (1993), mezinárodního festivalu soudobé hudby MusicOlomouc (2009), hudebně-pedagogického časopisu Paedagogia Musica (2021). Působil jako člen ústředních orgánů Svazu českých skladatelů a koncertních umělců a České hudební rady i jako radní Státního fondu kultury České republiky (2018–2021). Jako dramaturg, člen či jako předseda soutěžních porot spolupracuje od roku 1973 s festivalem pěveckých sborů Svátky písní Olomouc. Publikoval sedm knih (z toho Imprints. Essays on Czech Music and Aesthetics v angličtině) a řadu studií na témata sahající od hudební estetiky a hudební kritiky přes hudební teorii až po dějiny soudobé hudební kultury. Byl jmenován čestným členem České společnosti pro hudební vědu (2019). Je autorem sto deseti skladeb, členem Ochranného svazu autorského i Společnosti českých skladatelů a jeho kompozice jsou koncertně uváděny a vydávány tiskem v České republice i v zahraničí. Sedm autorských CD (Vivat universitas!, Zpíváme si, Ej, Janku!, Přeludya, Cesta k slunci, Píseň starého blázna, Vysoko hvězda) bylo kladně přijato domácí i zahraniční hudební kritikou. Jeho sbory a písničky pro děti na verše Jiřího Žáčka vzbuzují na autorském kanále „Zpíváme si“ (YouTube, 2022) zájem desítek tisíc diváků a posluchačů po celém světě.
